Everything under one roof
Gemini press, leading lithographic printers, has a distinct advantage over its major competitors as it is able to offer a one stop shop service. The comprehensive plant list means that Gemini is able to supply its clients with everything from a short run digital business card through to a long run multi paginated brochure / magazine, all from its Headquarters in Shoreham. Gemini has always invested heavily in its staff and machinery and therefore is able to offer many facilities that few UK commercial printers could match. These include die cutting, heat set laminating, creasing and folding, perfect binding and spot uv varnish. Add to this our cutting edge presses and finishing machines, and there is now no reason to go anywhere but Gemini Press.

Gemini looks to keep Christmas momentum going
After a record breaking final quarter to 2011, Gemini Press looks to start 2012 off with the same vigour. January sees the introduction of £800,000 worth of finishing equipment. The installation includes two Heidelberg folding machines with integrated delivery systems and the market leading Muller E140 stitching machine; in essence these machines will double folding and stitching capacity and therefore eliminate the congestion in this department. Gemini Press now offers one of the strongest print finishing solutions in the south.
To manage the busy times ahead we have recruited two new production staff and one new estimator. These three additions will assist in coping with the increased production work load, offer quicker estimate response times and of course continue the high standards of service our clients have come to expect and rely on.

New Muller Martini Primera E140 Stitcher
Over the Christmas period Gemini Press has taken delivery of the market leading Muller E140 stitcher. The E140 guarantees a high degree of efficiency and therefore is the perfect addition to Gemini’s finishing department.
The E140 is equipped with Amrys (Automatic Make Ready System). The feeder, stitcher, trimmer and stacker can be quickly and automatically set to a desired size. This means The E140 has the shortest setup time on the market. That and a running speed of up to 14,000 cycles/h means Gemini have now doubled their stitching capabilities.
The E140’s three knife trimming system offers precision cutting and every book is checked inline via the E140’s built in photo electric cell. The cell takes precise measurements of every book to keep job unity.
Another reason why Gemini Press, are at the forefront of Lithographic and Digital printing.

Gemini Twins With Heidelberg for Folder Supply
Gemini Press is taking delivery of two latest generation folders from Heidelberg, a Stahlfolder KH 82 combination model with pallet feeder and a TH 56 buckle machine with round pile feeder.
These highly automated machines replace older models at the Shoreham plant and are part of a move by the company to update its finishing equipment to keep pace with the highly productive pressroom where the line up includes a Speedmaster SM 102-10-P.
Steve Cropper, managing director, says: “We like the automation in the knife unit and the fact that data can be preset and saved for repeat work. Finishing is a critical element in achieving the quickest turnround times without compromising quality. Having high output safeguards costs and overall competitiveness.”
Gemini’s two main printing plants in Shoreham and Brighton employ 100 staff and generate more than half the group’s £20m turnover across the south of England. The company is both ISO 14001 and FSC certified and the company recognises that good reliable equipment minimises paper waste.
The KH 82 is the ideal folder for the industrialised printer or trade finisher – it is the folding equivalent of the long perfector in the press room and is ideal for commercial work in runs of 2,000 to 200,000. Automation and quick set up create flexibility. It is no longer a problem to switch between jobs when an urgent contract needs to be prioritised.
The TH 56 is a fantastically productive buckle machine. In time trials run by Heidelberg it was compared with the older and more manual Ti 52. The Ti 52 completed eight jobs in 49 minutes, the TH 56 in 27 minutes without data pre-programmed and in 11 minutes when drawing programmes from memory. It is this type of lift in throughput that Gemini is seeking.

Gemini invests and appoints Steve Cropper as MD

By Adam Hooker Friday, 16 September 2011
Commercial printing company The Gemini Group is undergoing a number of significant changes, following the death of its founder and chairman, Nigel Holmes.
A number of personnel changes have already been made and the company is set to begin an £800,000 spend on finishing equipment. The company has also shut down its loss-making Heathfield subsidiary Quentin Press, at the cost of 30 jobs.
Holmes, who founded the business more than 40 years ago, passed away on 1 July. The company has made two senior appointments: a new chairman, Derek Weir, who worked most recently for Barclays Corporate in Scotland and Ireland, and Steve Cropper, who was previously managing director of Gemini Press, has been named as managing director of the entire group. Non-executive director John Boyle, a major shareholder, is also to take a more active role in the running of the company.
Cropper said: "John will be advising us when he is needed. We have been left to run the group – he won’t micro-manage, but the extra business acumen he brings with him will help the directors to take over. " In the next three months Gemini plans to install a stitching line and two folding lines; with the company "very close" to deciding which manufacturers it will use. The new machinery will be installed at the £16m-turnover company’s flagship Shoreham facility, as well as at a new plant in Brighton. After that investment is expected to come thick and fast. Cropper added: "Gemini Group has suffered in recent years because we have not invested. We have had a bottleneck in the finishing department and that needs to be cleared. "As soon as those machines have been installed we will look at other parts of the group, investment will filter down. " The new leadership has also shut subsidiary Quentin Press, a commercial printer that handled predominantly journals and magazines. It was closed on 5th September. According to Cropper the company has lost money in each of the last three years, despite continued investment. "It was going to take a massive investment to turn it around," he said. "We could not carry on funding it without putting the rest of the group at risk."
